چکیده

This paper examines the problem of a moving robot tracking a moving object with its cameras, without requiring the ability to recognize the target to distinguish it from distracting surroundings. A novel aspect of the approach taken is the use of controlled camera movements to simplify the visual processing necessary to keep the cameras locked on the target. A gaze holding system implemented on a robot's binocular head demonstrates this approach. Even while the robot is moving, the cameras are able to track an object that rotates and moves in three dimensions. The central idea is that localizing attention in 3-D space makes precategorical visual processing suucient to hold gaze. Visual xation can help separate the target object from distracting surroundings. Converged cameras produce a horopter (surface of zero stereo disparity) in the scene. Binocular features with no disparity can be located with a simple lter, showing the object's location in the image. Similarly, an object that is being tracked is imaged near the center of the eld of view, so spatially-localized processing helps concentrate visual attention on the target. Instead of requiring a way to recognize the target, the system relies on active control of camera movements and binocular xation segmentation to locate the Product endorsement disclaimer: references to speciic brands, equipment, or trade names in this document are made to facilitate understanding and do not imply endorsement by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

3D Real-time Tracking of Points of Interest based on Zero-disparity Filtering

We describe the implementation of a real-time active vision system which tracks objects of diierent shape and size in space. We use a 4 DoF stereo camera head and special imaging hardware to achieve a smooth pursuit of the object in front of a complex scene. Vergence control is based on zero-disparity. Pan and tilt angles are calculated with the object's center of gravity. While the current dis...

Eye Movements, Strabismus, Amblyopia, and Neuro-Ophthalmology Directional Asymmetries in Human Smooth Pursuit Eye Movements

Humans make smooth pursuit eye movements to bring the image of a moving object onto the fovea. Although pursuit accuracy is critical to prevent motion blur, the eye often falls behind the target. Smooth Pursuit Eye Movements in Children with Strabismus and in Children with Vergence Deficits

PURPOSE The objective of our study was to examine horizontal smooth pursuit performance in strabismic children and in children with vergence deficits, and to compare these data with those recorded in a group of control age-matched children. METHODS Binocular eye movements were recorded by video-oculography in ten strabismic children (mean age: 9.8±0.8) and seven children with vergence deficit...

Lingering Binocular Vision Issues after a Suspected Concussion: A Case Study

Past clinical research using eye tracking with patients who have known concussions shown deficits in eye-target synchronization, smooth pursuit eye movements, velocity error and positioning errors [1,2]. Clinical assessments of suspected brain injuries include gross assessments of oculomotor abilities (such as the Vestibular Ocular Motor Screening (VOMS) [3]. However, quantitative, and highly s...

The Initiation of Smooth Pursuit is Delayed in Anisometropic Amblyopia

PURPOSE Several behavioral studies have shown that the reaction times of visually guided movements are slower in people with amblyopia, particularly during amblyopic eye viewing. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the initiation of smooth pursuit eye movements, which are responsible for accurately keeping moving objects on the fovea, is delayed in people with anisometropic amblyopia. METHODS...
